The University of Chicago was opening a brand new Center in Beijing to foster a collaborative atmosphere with Chinese colleagues and to provide a lecture and meeting space for students and alumni expatriates. This was a high-profile opening that required an elegant web presence to provide a showplace to highlight events, faculty accomplishments, and the latest news. Two levels of navigation were needed to separate out the three main focus areas of the center from the more pedestrian navigation.
The design had to strike a delicate balance of being cohesive with the main University brand standards, but also allowing for some visual cues to its foreign location. Subtle background textures of Chinese textiles were used to highlight the navigation of the three main focus areas. A large feature space was created to give emphasis to the latest events and news, while upcoming conferences and workshops are easily accessible from the home page. Tasks included competitor research, site map architecture and organization, design and production of templates, and many Skype calls to Beijing.
