And the 2010 Rogue Element Green Design Grant Winner is . . .

The winner of our 2010 Grant is Barkwheats. Barkwheats is a Maine-based company that makes gluten- and grain‐free dog biscuits from organic ingredients. In addition to working with the local small‐scale farmers who grow their ingredients, they also work with local apiaries to source raw honey, and local harvesters to supply sea vegetable (kelp) from Maine's coastal waters. Even more impressively, they purchase fairly traded ginger from an organic farming cooperative in Belize, making Barkwheats the first pet product to carry the Fair Trade Certified mark. In other words, their biscuits are just one step from the fields in which the ingredients are grown.

In addition to their responsible ingredient sourcing, the Barkwheats packaging is a 100% recycled box and a biodegradable bag made of wood pulp, both of which can be thrown in a home compost or woodstove when finished. Wow!

Rogue Element will be helping them with educational and trade show materials, among other things. We are very excited to help more dogs and their loving owners get exposed to organic products like Barkwheats!
